A VPS or virtual private server is a pathway between dedicated and shared hosting.

It is much affordable in comparison to a dedicated server and is far better than a shared one.

But how do you choose the right VPS hosting plan for your business?

If this is your question too, then this article is for you!

In this article, I will discuss everything about VPS hosting services that, I hope will help you to choose the best plan as per your need.

What is a Virtual Private Server

In VPS or virtual private server, a physical machine is separated into a lot of virtual compartments and on each compartment, server software is set up on them which makes each compartment or unit function on its own.

Other websites may also be hosted on the physical system your website is being hosted on. However, only your website would be the only one hosted in the virtual compartment which is allotted to you or that you have chosen, as the case may be.

Other websites being hosted on the system won’t affect the existence of your website on that same system. Your website and other websites get exactly the same system resources you pay for.

A typical example might be, having each website residing in a separate room in a big house with all the resources the website needs in that room.

You get total access to your server like it is your own dedicated server but the thing is you are still sharing the bandwidth, RAM, and CPU of the physical machine.

With VPS hosting you will have total control of your server without getting anything really different from what you would get from a dedicated server.

And above all, you won’t have to spend more on having a virtual server and will still get a high-performance website.

Tips to Choose the Best VPS Hosting Plan

There are some important factors that you must consider when choosing a VPS Hosting provider for your site. Let’s check them in detail.

Managed vs Unmanaged Server

In VPS hosting, when compared to shared hosting, you get root access to the server and you are in control of the virtual server. Which means, someone has to manage the server and monitor its performance.

If your VPS provider handles this for you, in that case you have a managed VPS but if not, you have to be the one to monitor your server yourself, and it is termed as unmanaged.

In unmanaged hosting, you have to monitor performance to ensure a healthy continued running of the server.

Should there be a server software crash or a security issue, you’ll be the one to fix it since you are the sole administrator.

So if you know your way around managing servers, servicing and repairs, then unmanned hosting is just for you.

If you’re however not familiar with things, then you might have to shell out a little more and pay for the management of your server.

The Operating System

The Operating system of your server is one very crucial factor you need to look at. Most vendors usually offer two popular system.

In case of Linux, it is an open source software and it is cheaper than Windows. It also supports a wider range of applications and is user-friendly.

These are the advantage it has over other operating systems. Although there are some applications Linux does not support which windows does e.g. ASP, ANET.NET

Configuration of Your Server

“You can’t build a great building on a weak foundation.”

You should try to know the quality of the machine your VPS is created on. The machine should be a reputable brand and of high capacity.

How your server is configured is a major factor in the website speed and how well it performs.

Scalability and Redundancy

Redundancy is the backup resource put in place at the data center. Should here be a failure in the supply of power, there should be generators and UPS to keep the system running.

If there is an interruption in the services of the internet service provider, there should be an alternative. Also, in case of too much load on a server, there should be another standby server.

Scalability refers to the capability of the system to handle occasional increased and sudden loads on the server.

Scalability and redundancy ensure higher uptime and a consistent performance.

Quota of Bandwidth Per Month

The majority of the VPS hosting providers have an amount of bandwidth that is imposed on your server and for you to get more, you will have to pay extra.

Before choosing a VPS hosting service, you must understand how much bandwidth will need. This will help you to ensure that you will not have to pay too much for the amount of bandwidth you are most likely to consume regularly.

Customer Support

A good VPS hosting provider should have a strong customer support team that will handle any kind of query and fixing any kind of issues that may arise at any point of time.

Though I am writing it at the end, it is actually one of the most important factors for an individual website owner.

Check the pricing of different hosting providers to make a choice that is suitable for your requirements and your pocket.
